Parent's Corner

While more children than ever before are taking part in sports today, studies show that children in the U.S. are far less fit than they used to be in previous decades. The reason behind this paradox is that most contemporary youth sports focuses on developing particular strengths, while overall strength, stamina and flexibility have taken a back seat. In fact, popular games that are not as popular anymore, such as hopscotch, can be great well-rounded physical activities.

Part of the responsibility for ensuring fitness in kids lies with the school and community, but the other part lies with parents or guardians. In order to ensure fitness in kids, guardians need to ensure that kids are not spending too much time before the computer or TV, or in the backseats of cars. Here are some things you can do along with your kids:

• Playing physically active games such as tag or hopscotch.

• Going for skating, walks or bike rides during the weekend.

• Dancing together to music.
